Hi guy's,
Touching base on a paint question. I have acquired the Green and Yellow Athearn RS3 number 449 and want to repaint it all green.

Which Reading Green paint is the best match for these Athearn RS3's in your experience? Just painting over the yellow would be a time saver as most of the rest looks very good.

Thanks for your input.

Chris:

While just painting over the yellow may seem like a timesaver, Don't do it. While the full-size railroads do that, it doesn't really work on HO locomotives. I've been painting and lettering Reading power for over 40-years, so I have some experience.

Scalecoat II Reading Green is a good match for fresh green.

Chris, I wish I could tell you for sure. I recently repainted an RS-3 in Pullman green. I'm not happy with the color. I have not applied the appropriate decals yet and given it a spray of dullcote finish. I've got several Alco RS-3's painted for Reading in various shades of green. The green is almost the color of brownish green and they look good. I won't give up. I'll experiment with colors for awhile on scraps. When the RS-3's were new they were constantly washed for passenger service. The one's assigned to freight service took a more grungy looking green, almost looking dull black. Experiment and good luck. Johnny C. Track Foreman, Chestnut Hill Station Shanty.
