What do you condsider as "Carpenter Gondolas"? To the best of my knowledge Carpenter Steel (now Carpenter Technology) never owned it's own standard guage rolling stock. Scrap steel coming into the plant from the Belt Line connection were railroad owned equipment, most likely from the Reading or the Pennsy. Oddly a lot of Parrish (later Dana)scrap was melted at Carpenter and even though they were next door neighbors and a carload of scrap may leave Parrish and go immediately to Carpenter, the scrap "transferred" through a "middle man" scrapper, so that Carpenter was not "obligated" to absorb all of the Parrish scrap. Carpenter did operate a 24" gauge industrial railroad inside the plant, utilizing flat cars, tank cars and "dog boxes" which were pulled by Plymouth diesels and cars tied together by ropes instead of couplers. Carpenter produces specialy steels (stainless and tool grades) by melting scrap metal and adding nickel and so forth to create a higher grade. Parrish would not generally utilize any steel from Carpenter for truck frames.
The gondola cars I am talking about had Carpenter Steel on them, I believe it was light blue lettering with dark green wording. Sometimes you could see them parked on an overpass along route 61 north of Reading in Muhlenberg Township. According to my dad these cars were leased from the Reading Lines.

Very interesing. I am not aware of these, but never say never. I have a new mission! I do now that Dana/Parrish had light blue gondolas with Dana and /or Parrish painted on them. I also accompanied Don Davis (RCT&HS)to Altoona (in the late 80's perhaps)to pick out and purchase several 86 (or so) foot flat cars for in-plant use at Dana (I bet I have pictures buried somewhere of these) When you mention the blue gons, I am trying to remember if they ventured over to Carpenter with scrap from Dana, hmmmm. But I cannot recall any gons stenciled for Carpenter. (bear in mind I don't remember much detail from the 60's or 70's - who knew we were supposed to remember this stuff.) I will begin the investigation.

The gondola cars I am talking about were around 50 foot and had either Carpenter Steel or Car/Tech on them. Not sure if these were used just in Reading PA area or were used on the mainline. These gondolas may have been used to go to the port near Philadelphia, as Carpenter shipped specialty steels internationally from their Reading PA plant at times.

Craig Bossler, more than likely the Reading areas foremost carcheologist, has no recollection nor record of Carpenter Steel Gondolas. This one will take photographic or documentary evidence to follow up on from here.

Guys,

I checked with Carpenter Technology Corp., and it was kind enough to answer my inquiry. It has no records of having its own gondolas lettered "Carpenter Technology" or "CarTech." However, the person I've been communicating with will check other sources to see if anyone has any information as to whether they may have existed.

In the meantime, please see the following new thread I've begun:

The person I have been communicating with was kind enough to send me some photographs of industrial locomotives that were owned by Carpenter Technology Corp., and I've received permission to post them here. Does anyone have any information regarding the equipment pictured?

Thanks,
Peter Zacharias
