I just finished making these. One is based on the tower at Gordon and the other just a Reading style water tower. They're going on my hi-rail layout. Let's call them semi-scale. I added a set of stone steps to the "Gordon" tower.

Those are very nice. I'm wondering though if the ladders would have ever had safety cages on them.

Also: Reading Company Standard Wooden Water Tank plans from the Office Of The Chief Engineer and dated July 1932 state, "In the State of Pennsylvania, ladders over 30 ft. high shall be equipped with cages as required by the Safety Standards of the Dept. of Labor and Industry."

These plans include drawings and specifications for the safety cages.

I've seen pics of towers with and without the cages. I added them because I thought that they look kewl.

Beautiful tanks, Janis. I'd love to see pictures of your layout!

Update: I just saw two pictures in the Belmont Yard thread and remember your article in the 1987 MR. It would be great to see more. We have some great hi-rail modelers on this site, in addition to very talented scale modelers. Variety is the spice of life!

If you go to Classic Toy Trains website, click on "VIDEOS" and then click on "READER VIDEOS" in the drop down, you'll see a video of the layout. I also have a ton of videos of the layout on YouTube.

Right now I'm working on the layout....adding a layer of detail. When I get that finished I'm going to take photos.

The layout looks great, Janis! Thanks for pointing me to the videos. I notice a lot of scratch built RDG structures: stations and MOW sheds, in addition to the towers and water tanks you've shared with us. I'd enjoy seeing them highlighted too.
