John, being a student of the Reading Trans. Co., a few questions.

1) Where any of this type trailer equipped with the curb-side door?
2) What year did the solid blue diamond appear in service?

When these Athearn models were first released, Caboose Hobbies noted the number of Reading reservations and ordered extra for the shelf. The shelf stock went quickly with restock occurring only once as the model sold out quickly. That release was trailer cars with either one or two semi-trailers and a box with just two semi-trailers. Don't recall if the semi-trailer was offered in single quantity. It is good to see another release.

1- The Fruehauf Trailers that the Athearn model represents had NO curb side door. But the RDG did have other trailers from other manufacturers that did have the curb side door and big blue diamond. The 206000 series trailer built by Brown Trailer MFG. was one series of trailers that had both the big blue diamond and curbside door.

2- I'm not exactly sure what year the big blue diamond appeared but I believe that the open top trailers #400000-400024 built by Trailmobile in 1966 was the first trailers to arrive new with the big blue diamond. Now that doesn't mean that they could have and probably did paint an existing trailer that they already had in service first to try out this new scheme which there is plently of re-painted large diamond trailers out there that I have seen.

For more information, photo's, and trailer drawings see my photo pages at

BTW these Athearn trailers during the first release were also available in a 2 pack and also singly on a 86' flat car. The new release is for single trailers only.

Did You Know?

October, 1962
Loss of mail and Railway Express Agency contracts prompts severe cuts in passenger service, including annulment of all service to Shamokin, and the Allentown-Harrisburg trains, and a reduction on remaining routes. RDCs replace most locomotive-hauled trains, freeing former passenger locomotives for freight service.
