Hello

I'm looking to model the famous Rambles trains. Are there any good reference sources out there?

What would the typical make up of a Rambles train be?

And are there any plans or diagrams out there, or any info with basic car dimensions?

Any information would be appreciated.

There are many sources out there. The Reading Company Technical & Historical Society is the best source. One or more of their "Bee Line" magazines has stories & data. There are DVD's "Rambling on the reading". As far as models "Bethlehem car works" makes most of the cars, assembled and kits. The T-1s were made available by "Broadway limited" in ramble paint as well as freight paint. Before that "Precision Craft Models" made them. as well as The brass models by Overland Brass & Custom Brass. Hopefully others will chime in with more details and magazine issues. as well as books like bosley book on Reading rolling stock shows passenger cars. well have fun on the research some models and books may only be found at swap meets or on e-bay.

A VHS tape showing many of the rambles filmed by the Chamberlain (sp?) brothers, believe one of them is Ken Chamberlain, is probably the best video survey of the Iron Horse Rambles. Both single and double locomotive trains of fifteen to twenty-one cars are seen in both close-up and panoramic views. West Milton, Gettysburg and Harrisburg rambles are well covered. Will pass on the name and producer of this video.

Craig T Bossler's book Color Guide to Rdg Freight & Passenger Equipment ny Morning Sun will have a few roster photos of coaches in general and also some of the other passenger equipment, specifically lettered for the Rambles, but not a lot of overall info.

Steve Gilbert produced a Rambles Special supplement to the RCT&HS Bee Line magazine around 1985. They may be in short supply via e-bay and auctions, however the Tech Society has copies in their archive for sure. Communication with Rick Bates, archivist at the museum in Hamburg, PA may get some sort of access to them. I am sure I have seen lists of cars assigned to various trains over the span of the trips, not sure how official they were.

Loss of mail and Railway Express Agency contracts prompts severe cuts in passenger service, including annulment of all service to Shamokin, and the Allentown-Harrisburg trains, and a reduction on remaining routes. RDCs replace most locomotive-hauled trains, freeing former passenger locomotives for freight service.
