What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

TOPIC: West Milton station

West Milton station 9 years 7 months ago #3414

I posted a slide a while back of an SW1200 tied up at W Milton in 1974, but I also just found a slide my Dad took on the same trip of the station itself.. Interesting how only a small portion of the old roof remained-I can only imagine a fire occurred at some point, but why not just replace the whole thing? Also-it's pretty narrow, kind of like my favorite one (but even narrower)- the Landisville depot as modeled by Model Hobbies years ago. Note how the brown paint weathered to more of an oxide read than the more typical faded chocolate brown on the freight shed in the background.. Also-note the funky chimney support on the adjacent building! Anyone know if it's still standing? Hard to imagine ten years earlier, in 1964, Reading Rambles were pounding through here with double-headed T-1's!

Mitch, wish you would have posted this about a week earlier. My wife and I moved the youngest in at Susquehanna University, and at one point I guess I was about 12 miles from the center of Milton. The next time I am up in that neck of the woods it is worth looking for, although I did get to stop at Weaver and grab some Scalecoat so all is not lost!!

Unfortunately, the West Milton passenger station is long gone, demolished back in the 1980s or 1990s

Did You Know?

October, 1962
Loss of mail and Railway Express Agency contracts prompts severe cuts in passenger service, including annulment of all service to Shamokin, and the Allentown-Harrisburg trains, and a reduction on remaining routes. RDCs replace most locomotive-hauled trains, freeing former passenger locomotives for freight service.
