What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

Speaking of the modeling frustration thread...

I just finished everything on my VO-1000 numbered #80, ready to weather it. I went online to check out some weathering on some of Reading's Baldwins, and noticed a picture of #80 showing it was one of the models wirth the 4 stacks on the hood. Well, without this reference picture 2 years earlier when I built this loco, I used the non-stack model.

I am unsure of the date of the picture of the #80, but I know they were built in the 40s. I'm modeling the mid 50s, so I'm wondering if maybe #80 was modified and had the stacks removed? I see pics of #79 and #81 without stacks, again no dates to reference.

If #80 was indeed a stack version, I have that shell variant ready for my second VO-1000, and I can simply change the road number on #80 before I get down to weathering.

Thanks in advance!!

To answer your question, #80 had 4 stacks which from what I understand were applied by the RDG. Not sure of the date. #80 and #81 were delivered in 1949. There is a picture of #80 in the Withers book showing the unit with stack extensions. The picture was referenced 1958. This unit went on to be modified to a SW1200m within a year or 2 of that picture. Hope that helps.
