What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

Good Day everyone,
During the Reading steam - Diesel transition era, with a double track main.
If looking at the train, was it moving left to right? Or Right to left? Looking at the track closest to you the rail fan with Brownie camera.

I saw a quip that the Reading ran opposite to most others.

Thanks in advance,
Hugh Sinn

Based on the arrows on my quarter-mile sheets, it looks as if the RDG ran the "normal" way--left to right on the track closest to the photographer.--Dave

In your time frame, it would be left to right, unless in territory where signaling for bi-directional running was installed.

A historical note. The Philadelphia & Reading originally ran the opposite direction on its double track lines. At that time it was the practice in England, where the P&R bought some of its earlier locomotives. One source credited the adoption of this practice to the financial influence of British bankers in the fledgling railway, while another source favors the emulation of British railway practices.
