What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

Good Day,
Found a pamphlet "100th Anniversary of the Reading Newtown Branch" by Larry Eastwood, late 1950's.

One of the pictures intrigued me. It shows NW2 #90 pulling a passenger train on the Newtown Branch in May of 1940.

There is no mention why. But I suspect it was to test diesels out for the branch, as it was not part of the electrification of the 1930's.

And interesting because the Newtown Branch has steam power into the early 1950's.

A great Reading branch to model.

Regards,

Hugh

in Dale Woodland's book "Reading Diesels Vol.1" it mentions that several diesel switchers were used on trial runs on passenger trains, basically to see if they could maintain the schedule if needed to be used ,in case of an emergency. the photo is probably of one of those trial runs.
