What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

Over on the Anthracite Railroads site the question of when several Anthracite railroads began painting their caboose handrails and grabs yellow. When did the Reading begin using yellow paint on their hacks??? In 1954 the diesels received safety upgrades of additional grab irons on the F units and yellow paint on locomotive handrails. Were handrails on non-revenue cars painted yellow in 54?

page 154 of John Hall's caboose book: "The handrails and ladders were not painted yellow until the building of class NMo in 1944."

Thank you. Will have to dig out John's book as my era of modeling is the transition period up to 1954. With a fair sized caboose fleet, the thought of having to repaint fine details from yellow to black was not relished.
