What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

The crossover is designed to be a trailing point crossover for the protection of the main track. I doubt a "train" ever went up the branch. Its also possible that a train/local traveling from Reading/Phoenixville to Abrams would stop and switch the industry.

Did the industry ever have its own engine or car mover. The track arrangement would be perfect for that, the industry shoves outbound cars onto the tail, the RDG picks up the outbounds and sets out inbounds and the car mover pulls them back up to the plant.

The Richard Jahn Facebook posting was July 18. On July 23, Dale Woodland commented on this Facebook post with a photo of a locomotive, a caboose and a box car rounding a curve among trees on the branch. I agree one can hardly call this a "train" though the caboose went along. The idea that a local's power (with, or without a caboose) went up the branch to leave and retrieve cars seems the best explanation how this was operated in later years. The 650-foot siding limits the length of the local, however.
