Has anyone figured out how to make these things run as decent as they look.

I have one that is noisier than a Hoover vacuum cleaner, and one that can't get out of it's own road 0 In fact if it has to deal with a grade, you better take Trailways.

Guess I will be tearing them down and reworking, I just don't feel like re-inventing the wheel if someone has already addressed them.

Never reworked one, but I thought about getting some of those powered trucks (whoever makes them these days), for my old athearn rdc's that had those funky rubber band systems. You'd probably want to talk to Green Elite Cab. That guy knows everything about commuter equipment.

would more weight help with the tractive effort? I have an original run from about whenever LL came out with them (7-8 years ago?) Mine wasn't noisy, but didn't like grades too much ..added some self -sticky tire weights from the auto parts store and it worked out well...but the PRSL didn't have much for grades!

NWSL makes a regearing kit for the Proto/Lifelike RDC, part number 2692-6. It’s available here for $24.95 (scroll to bottom of the page for listing).

HI Guys... I repowered an Athearn with a NWSL spud truck many years ago. Worked well and was even able to pull a second dummy RDC for a two car train.
Still have them, but need to re-decoder them and add sound for the East DCC system.
Thanks,
Barry
