TOPIC: Reading reference photos

Reading reference photos 9 years 10 months ago #3165

Ah...ha...ha!!! I struck gold! After many hours, during many days, throughout the last few months I finally got to what I was looking for and purely by accident.

www.jonathondenson.com has a good number of contemporary photos of the city of Reading. It doesn't take much imagination to look at these photos and get a feel of what it all looked like 40-50 or 60 years ago.
Check it out.

And Rob, during your times in Laureldale...did you ever notice the ties embedded in the top of the RR cut along Rosedale Ave on either side of the west end of the Elizabeth Ave bridge? They are remains of the Allentown and Reading Transit Company...abandoned in 1934.

How about some of the books put out by the Outer Station Project, or Morning Sun Books. Also don't forget the Anthracite Railroads Historical Society.

Yes, Mark I remember not only the ties in the ground, but also rail stuck straight into the ground at the same place.

Nice pics on that site Mark. Actually makes the city look inviting. I know that Elizabeth ave was the terminus for the trolley line out of Reading for awhile at the end. I have a pic somewhere in one of my Passing Scene books by George Meiser. If you can get ahold of any of these they are a good reference for what you are looking for. Watch eBay. so tell us more about this layout of yours.
