Did these first generation diesels on the RDG have turbos? Have started a decoder installing program and was stymied when it was noted Soundtraxx offers both non-turbo and turbo versions for the 567. Thank you

The "F" series locomotives produced by EMD had a roots blower on the engine instead of a turbocharger. Various experiments with turbochargers on GP9 locomotives led to EMD producing the GP20. Roots blower equipped locomotives will have multiple exhaust stacks, while a turbocharged engine will have just one fairly large port. Keep in mind this spotting feature is in reference to EMD products.

SPHogger, Thank you for the Roots blower info. I wanted to insure the F units did or did not sound like the Reading's GP7s, the whine when the rpm was dropping off. I never heard the any of the Reading's freight F units except under load on the Newberry symbol freights, and that was briefly as they shortly left the roster as trade-ins. Assume then that the FP7's sounds ramping up and winding down are a good reference for the F3 and F7?

Bowser's recent offering of the Stewart F units equipped with LOK sound decoders is impressive in both performance and sound quality.

they would sound exactly like a GP7, with those cool harmonics that resemble a Waring blender on steroids when she's really wound up...
