Noting several articles where replacement handrails were bought to replace the non prototypical handrails supplied with the model, here's a simple way to correct the condition without the extra expense. The Altas HO releases of the 70s and 80s had nice stanchions but thick railings. After becoming frustrated trying to get the needed handrail kits (Hobbytown, Kemtron, etcs.), I resorted to cutting the stanchions from the railings with a slight piece of the railing left on the stanchion. The circular railing outline on the stanchion was marked in the center with a sharp scribe then drilled out for 0.012" wire. While this sounds tedious, after doing a few, it went quickly. The attached photo is of the wire railings applied to Atlas's 1977 release of the ALCO RS-3.

I received the Reading RS-3 decals in perfect order. I also appreciate the time you spent sending them to me and even more so for you detailed instructions on their application. You are a true Model Railroader, an artist, a builder and a real gentleman. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you. I will forward a picture of the finished model upon its' completion. Thanks again. Sincerely, Johnny C. Retired Freight Locomotive Engineer but still running trains. I guess the bug never ceases.
