TOPIC: Mercersburg RR Flatcar - Ex Reading?

Mercersburg RR Flatcar - Ex Reading? 5 years 10 months ago #6221

The Mercersburg Railroad operated from 1979-1980 on a 17-or-so-mile branch line from Marion, PA to Mercersburg, PA (South Penn Iron > Cumberland Valley > PRR > PC > CR > MERW.) It being local to me, I'm trying to gather information and do some modeling of the equipment. Besides two former LIRR S2s and a SOU bay window caboose, the line owned a flatcar for MW service. The only information I've found on the car suggests it came from the Reading. I'm wondering if a member here can confirm or disprove this and possibly provide more information. It bears a little resemblance to some of the LIRR float idler cars but doesn't match anything I can find there, so I'm trying to look further into the Reading possibility.

Here are some photos of the car from Alan Maples' collection. Unfortunately the railroad predates me by a decade and a half, so I don't have any of my own.

Following the abandonment of the Mercersburg, the locomotives and caboose went to the Lykens Valley Railroad in Millersburg. I haven't seen any information on whether the flatcar went as well, but I assume so. Anything you can tell me is appreciated.
