TOPIC: LNE covered hopper modifications

LNE covered hopper modifications 9 years 2 months ago #4143

Well, it's done after 10 years or so, taking a Bowser ACF hopper and converting it to the older style 10-hatch version. Back in the 80's, when E&B (later Eastern Car Works) came out with what was then a state-of-the-art kit, Todd Sullivan did a great article on modifying them in RMC. I took the Bowser car, did the offset-dogleg angle to the side sills by the ladders, added new stirrup steps, filled in most of the side opening triangle, and added hatches, using Detail Associates hatches. I used an old Champ LNE covered hopper set, and weathered with dry brush and chalks...

Nice work Mitch! Those dog-legged end sills must have been tricky modifications. Did you
Carve those out of the existing casting, or are they replaced pieces?

thanks-only took 6 years, unlike a lot of you guys that seem to hatch 10 cars or locos a week! Yikes-you make it tough on us part-time modelers! yes, the ends of the side sills were carefully carved out with an X-acto and a cut down sanding stick, eyeballed to size against the drawing in the article.(I want to add hand-carved, the old fashioned way, by skilled artisans sealed up in caves overseas... but I won't)Thanks for the complements.. I should have another car or two done in time for my retirement party...
