This is my attempt to document a spectrum based I10sa in n-scale. The motor was the first thing to go, replaced with a Maxon 1016 RE series motor. The shell if from the old discontinued bachmann 2-8-0, just stripped and now its ready for details.

The modification is not difficult the old shell fits perfectly on the spectrum chassis without any modifications, I used the firebox stairs and pilot from the spectrum version. The drawbar can't be re-used however as the I10 cab extends out way to far.

To come next:
drawbar
shell details
running gear

Chris, how does the motor run? I have 8 of those old consolidations, and they are hit or miss. Might be the age and the previous owners' use, but If that motor smooths it out and gives better starting torque, I'd happily swap every single one out. This is the one decency that we N scalers have to a steamer...minus the tender, which of course you are swapping out as well with the medium tender. Looks good!

Also, will you be installing DCC or wiring the spectrum tender to the loco itself and use the pin connector for a plug and play?

Has not seen any running time yet but the motor is whisper quite and you can't stop the shaft with your fingers to much torque. I thought about remotoring the old frame but its just not worth it, the new 2-8-0 mechanism is just way better. At least you have the shells :)

It will get DCC and sound.

OH! you are swapping the Spectrum mechanism under the older shell! I misread. Can you upload a picture of the running gear to the shell? I thought the spectrum 2-8-0 mechanism was better suited for the I-9s than the I-10, but I have not seen the shells swapped...Now you have my full attention!
