Has anyone ever used the Scalecoat Reading Yellow Paint? I understand there was a limited run a number of years ago. I'm wondering what yellow that paint would represent.

Also would there be any interest in getting a new batch of it made? I've got some connections and would be willing on buying it in bulk and then reselling if there is interest.

Thanks,

Rob Hinkle

I used it several years ago on a couple locomotives - compared to PollyScale Reading Yellow it has more of a "mustardy" or "buff" cast. At present I prefer the PollyScale for my locomotives.

I've been using SCII RDG yellow for years,I really stocked up when it was available.I've been contacting paint manufacturers for years and it seems to me nobody wants to tackle RDG yellow.Talking about the proper shade of RDG yellow is like talking about the propper shade of LV's cornel red.I do like Polly S's shade, but me and water based paints just don't mix no matter how many times I've tried. Now if they would make this shade in the Floquil brand I'd be happy.
So,to answer your question I'd be interested if SCII RDG yellow would be available again.
I contacted Tru-Color Paint(HQ's in Arizona)about RDG yellow and they never even heard of it.They do offer RDG green though.Anyway after some e-mail contacts they suggested their reefer yellow as an alternative.
I admit I have never used their product and if anyone has I would like to hear some feed back concerning their paints. Thanks in advance.

I too have the scalecoat RDG yellow. Haven't painted any loco's, bought it mostly just to have Rdg Yellow in my selection of paints. I have used it when I wanted yellow for almost anything. OH, I might have used it on some loco handrails.
I do like water based paints and am getting ever so slightly better at air brushing. I use a lot of craft paints - large bottle and can usually be purchased for $1 or less!
Thanks,
Barry

I remember my first dealing with SCII Reading Yellow. I painted an SW-1500 straight from the bottle and said WOW that is really yellow, maybe the green will tone it down. Masked and sprayed the green. Pulled the tape off and said, well maybe the dullcoat will tone the yellow down a little. After the dullcoat, I weathered it. Then I sold it, got a new one and poured some of the SCII Reading Yellow into a bottle of reefer white and started over.

That said, I really like things a little pale, so pretty much ignore me and do what pleases your eye. It is the only one that counts.... somebody out there liked the "bright" yellow SW enough to buy it from me and I sure hope they still like it. I still like mine.

I have always tinted reefer yellow to suit my taste. Just like Athearn's Reading Green is a little to light, Reading yellow varies based on age, lighting, cleanliness, and many other factors. Just don't use a tan color. Back in the day (early to mid '70's) a friend of mine had some Lionel locos painted with Reading yellow from the shops. In articifical light they looked almost orange!
