I never really considered myself a rivet-counter, but with the price of models these days, I guess I expect more. I've made some pricey (at least to me) purchases that were a disappointment once out of the box--lacking visible detail like the brake rigging, having cast-on detail vs. separately applied parts, or missing end lettering. I must be getting to be one of those picky, ornery old guys.--Dave

You're fine Dave, Those corporate schmos' only care to a point. As in the one in front of the zeros. We are the real historians here, OCD and all. I just looked over my color guide, the Athearn site, and the alphabet route, and believe that athearn simply has the class wrong. their model is essentially a GHo with 19 ribs, not the older GHg. Besides the rib count, the length of the fish belly section is different between the 2 classes as well, with the Ghg bottom chord being a couple panels longer, thus creating a noticably different profile.

The Reading cars are also welded not riveted. A future project for an ECW gon.

Dave, It probably wouldn't be difficult to add some styrene to the appropriate ribs on the athearn model to get a really nice GHo. This shot shows the rib variations well.

Mark, here's a page chock full of info on the ecw gons. The square steel center weight looks like a good idea for either model.

I have to agree with you Chris. I believe more yellow-green gons are needed. But we always have Tom's really nice Gon Decal set to letter anything that we need!
