Hi folks,

I am looking for ideas for a HO switching layout. Can anyone recommend a location on the Reading that would make for a nice little switching layout? Looking to avoid a spaghetti bowl and would like to stay somewhat proto. The space I have is a 10' long wall and 7' long wall for a "L" shape.

Appreciate any input. Thank you!!

Take a look in one of the recent Model Railroaders at the layout plan suggested for Hershey, PA. That would be a great start.

The S&L Branch coming off the Low Grade at Tuckerton is short and sweet with three or four industries including the large cement plant.

Look at Tom's layout progress on this website at something like the West Reading Branch operations. Again short and sweet.
Just about any small town with some industry can provide a target.
You can get a lot of stuff in 17 feet.

What era are you thinking about for this?

Old S&L plan I drew up, if you're into a rural branchline theme, maybe pull some ideas.

Thank you! I will study this plan carefully for ideas. Hearing about the S&L branch always makes me think of the Pennsy film "The S&L Story". :)

Did Reading serve a freighthouse/area like the LV did at Wilkes-Barre? I always thought that would make for a neat switching layout.

The Reading is devastated by Hurricane Agnes; washouts and damage across the system require significant effort to repair, and also hasten the abandonment of marginal branches.
