This board is the place where questions and information specific to MODELING the Reading Company, its equipment and operations can be shared - questions like "What was the window arrangement of AF Tower in Alburtis?" and "What color paint do YOU use to paint the Reading's cream-and-brown buildings?" We also want to hear about YOUR Reading modeling projects!

I've been going through boxes I mothballed years ago. I've found some candidates for future projects.

I have 2 Athern BB Trainmaster H-24-66 undec. One powered, one dummy. I've rehabbed Athern BB in the past to get them running very well, so that is not the issue. I'm looking at the shells and wondering if I can make these into RDG passenger units. My choice ranges from just painting them and slapping decals on them and calling it close enough, to doing major surgery to get a good looking model.

My skills are modest & rusty. But, I think these would make a good learning project.

Differences I see right off the bat:
Number board are wrong.
Headlights are wrong.
Fan housings look clunky.
Louvers are in the wrong places.

In your opinions, what would you change? What parts would you add?

Thanks for your input.

The grilles and fans beg to be modeled appropriately and are an awesome feature of these monsters.
If you can handle it - do it. That would make the other modifications seem like a breeze and worth the effort...

I too have an Athearn Blue Box Train Monster (Master) that has been languishing on the workbench. Dynamic brake has been removed and the horn is installed into the end. Building an insert for the radiator banks is simple enough, but I still have not figured out how to screen the silly things with something that looks good, yet is not overly fragile. One idea has been to use Atlas parts and graft then into the Athearn shell. Yes, the quick reply is to dump the Athearn model and to buy an Atlas version, but even with the inaccuracies, I would prefer to have a model that has the mark of my efforts. Besides shading the molded screens with flat black paint, are there any good ideas out there about modeling the radiator banks?

I've seen some fine mesh brass screening out there that would probably work well. About $15 for an 8" x 10" piece on the eBay.

Concerning the original post to this subject, the number boards and headlights are reported to be wrong. Maybe my observation skills are feeling pretty puny, or are you looking at a Southern Pacific version of the Athearn Train Master model? If not, what am I missing as to the number board and headlight details?
