This board is the place where questions and information specific to MODELING the Reading Company, its equipment and operations can be shared - questions like "What was the window arrangement of AF Tower in Alburtis?" and "What color paint do YOU use to paint the Reading's cream-and-brown buildings?" We also want to hear about YOUR Reading modeling projects!

Only 7 of the 25 dynamic brake equipped units had 1,400 gallon fuel tanks. 444-450 had larger tanks while 481-499 had small tanks. Most likely, as the 7 units were equipped with hump control, the railroad liked the idea of the extra weight of 600-gallons of fuel (approx. 5,000 lbs.) for humping heavy trains. FYI, before anyone suggests that the extra fuel was needed for Grace Mine operations, please remember that these 7 locos were ordered in 1953 and pelletizing ore was only becoming a reality in 1958.

So, in other words, any place you see it written that these 7 RS-3's were ordered specifically for Grace Mine service, don't yo9u believe it!

A diesel pulling a train burns about 4 gal/mile. 800 gal is roughly 200 miles range if its in power the whole time. On the RDG, 200 miles is a long trip. As comparison, a modern 6 axle has a 5000 gal fuel tank and has a range over 1000 miles.
