Reading some new (to me) Reading diesel books. What was the thinking behind the amazingly small fuel tanks on the RS3 aka RS1?

Not sure the Reading really had any long runs that required large fuel tanks, but they look standard on both freight and passenger versions. The smaller fuel tank left room for a boiler water tank.

Good photo's at the Fallen Flag's website. www.rr-fallenflags.org/rdg/rdg.html

Some end photos of Trainmasters there too.

Most RS-3's and GP-7's had an 800-gallon fuel tank. Only 444 to 450 had the 1,400-gallon tank. I haven't read anything about units running out of fuel on the road and I believe that the 800 gallon tank covered most runs adequately.

Good question? As the larger fuel tanks appeared on dynamic brake equipped units, could it have been the greater fuel consumption with dynamics or was it to reduce the frequency of fueling and the attendant labor cost??? The small fuel tanks were not peculiar to the Reading.

The 800 gallon fuel cell is located under the cab in between the walkway. The cab actually sits on top of the cell.
