Reading HTj, a USRA twin no. 73628 shows us a "herald" with a shop date of March 1942. This is the earliest photo I have.

Rob, Reading Railroad Magazine by Outer Station Project had an article on those proposed hopper car logo's. The Crusader Logo, Reading Anthracite Route, plus other logos are in Volume #25 Issue #1. January, 2009

Thanks for the information. So if it was there in 1942, it would be found on hopper in the transition era. I plan to give several RDG hoppers to a friend who models the PRR and is about to put in a coal mine on his layout.
As a side issue, can any of you put a date when speed lettering was introduced?? I know the green/yellow scheme can in 1962, but I thought that speed lettering was before that.

according to a discussion on facebook concerning this topic the first car to receive speed lettering was a covered hopper in 1953
