We also want to hear about YOUR Reading modeling projects!

TOPIC: P2K GP30

I've had a P2k RDG GP30 for several years now. My immediate reaction to the model was that the green is too "leafy" in color. Should have more of an "olive" tint.
What do you guys think? To me, the green looks totally off.

agreed-many rtr Rdg units are too "green"... As many have stated though, it's in the eye of the beholder.. also your layout room lighting.. incandescent or fluorescent or mixed... a darker overspray of weathering with a dark green works if you mask it and don't spray the yellow part, for starters, chalk, other weathering media...

As I posted on other topics, the correct colors of locomotives are very elusive. Only a brand new locomotive will match the factory color, after all Reading locos were all issued with enamel paints in the 50's and 60's, so even fresh, no two may be exactly alike. Factor in road road grime, where the engine was in service, and weather effects, and color varied unit to unit as well as from paint date to paint date. I'm with Mitch, weather the unit to suit.

Rick, compare these two photos of 3639. Note that just form use, even the weathered color varies

The two photos of 3639 demonstrate the effect of light, too.

Shadows in the top photo foreground are long, so the lighting is from very low sun. This imparts a "warmer," more yellow color. In addition the light is directly perpendicular to the locomotive side, so it is brighter and shifts the color, too.

On the other hand, the lower picture appears to have been taken in more diffuse, directly overhead, midday light and that will add a blue tint.

Those two effects, in addition to weathering, certainly make the colors appear different.

Windsor makes a really good point. The broadside was taken at Water by my buddy Bob Gottschall. Probably late afternoon in February or March. The second shot was taken in Birdsboro on the wye from the Reading Belt Branch to the Main Line, but was taken around 5:30 PM in June. One of the longest days of the year so the sun is much higher.
