What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

Posted over on the Trainorders Website:

Today could very well have been the last revenue run for the ESPN Kutztown branch. the McConway & Torley mill in Kutztown is closing May 5,2013.
This line has a long and colorful history. it has operated continuously since January 1st 1870. It is currently owned by the Borough of Kutztown and East Penn Railways has operated it since the mid 90's. It was originally a Corenelus Vanderbuilt railroad. Leased by the Philadelphia & Reading (Reading Company) since 1870. the original name of the Railroad was the Allentown & Auburn Railroad. In 1976 it became line 910 of USRA and was operated by Conrail. After Conrail an operator named Anthracite Railways operated it and then The Blue Mt & Reading. then in 1993 East Penn became the operator. The Borough of Kutztown has owned the line since the year 2000.
It is a sad day.Hopefully the line Will operate again.

What ever happened to the planned excursions that they were going to operate over this trackage? Didn't that line buy some ex. RDG MU cars from Septa to use as coaches?

Don’t know about those excursions, but this was another post on the same thread:

"The only train I ever saw run on that branch had a fake Thomas the Tank Engine on one end and if I recall correctly a badly faded Guilford unit actually supplying the power on the other. I believe the coaches were ex-Reading MU's stripped of their motors [...] "

Thanks for the information. Do you know the reason for closing the mill? I would guess it's no longer a viable enterprise.

What a shame.

That's the one. It was a long time ago. So I don't remember much. At least 15 years ago maybe? I'm guessing that it didn't get off to a good start so they shut it down. Is the equipment still there?
Thanks,
John Caples
