What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

I have only seen locomotive roster shots at Darby Creek. maybe there might be some photos in some of the color books published on the Reading.

Nothing in the Morning Sun Rdg in color book, maybe Volume 2. Nothing in Pennypacker's black-and-white book. Maybe Reading Facilities in color? I have scanned some old Instamatic B&W shots I took around 1970 that show one end of the engine house and turnatable. but nothing of the yard...It was a busy place in the 70's with a regular road job every day and a bunch of locals to work the yard and the industrial plants between there and Chester as well. (Scott Paper, the refineries, etc)

A little grainy, but maybe helpful. Taken in 1971. Yard power was the 2710. Road power that day was 3634-510-634. The engine house was on the Philly end, just off PA 291 (Industrial Hwy) Pre-I 95, the highway is off to the right, the Delaware River off to the left...

The Darby Creek Yard was located in Essington along Industrial Blvd. just west of present-day Rt. 420, correct?

There are aerial photographs at:

Wow-that's it. In the last shot, under construction I-95 is prominent. You can make out the engine house and turntable at the east end of the yard in all shots. The big industrial complex to the east (right) is the Westinghouse turbine plant. In the older shots, the old Baldwin works, with the PRR main going across diagonally is also visible on the left side of the photos. Thanks so much for digg
ing these aerials up!!!!
