Here are two photos I took in October 1986 simply marked Shumans Tunnel, complete with 3 (count em ???) questions marks. Perhaps someone can confirm.. If they ARE NOT Shuman's, I would say they were of Lofty

OK I will respond as an edit to keep the info at one spot rather than a later reply... Using LNE401's comparisons, These photos are of the opposite ends of Shuman's Tunnel as they are consecutively numbered negatives. I sure wish the tracks were still in with a loco were rushing out of them!
Perhaps we can use Brian's Time Machine and take our digital cameras....

Mystery solved, yes Mark your research is correct and the Reading did have eight tunnels. The photos I used for reference are from Trackside Reading Anthracite Country with the Kantner brothers. The first photo is of Shumans at milepost 135, ten miles east of Catawissa. Now, comparing Rob's pics, the second is a dead ringer of Shuman's. The second photo is the west portal of Lofty, one of these days I will take a ride to photograph the other portal, wish I would have done this 10 years ago when I drove through it. The last is Tamaqua on the south side (compass) and this is very easy to access. I hope this info is a good help to all, Bill.

Here's the tunnel and subway section from the 1917 ICC final engineering report at the National Archives. There are listed 9 tunnels and 1 subway, which is the Pennsylvania Avenue cut and cover in Philadelphia, in the Philadelphia & Reading system.

Isn't it funny what you can find when browsing old maps. Ironically I only found out about Lofty tunnel maybe 9 months ago after wondering where Ruperts was/is (from a photo on this web site). I subsequently took an interest in the Catawissa branch and two weekends ago downloaded topo maps from the USGS to trace it's path.
So my re-education of the Reading continues. If have any more questions...well I know where to go for the answers.

Shumans Tunnel is still there and very much intact. The abandoned railbed is an unofficial hiking trail today through state game lands and makes for a nice walk.

Also worth mentioning are two other tunnels, Ryans Tunnel on the Catawissa Branch above Quakake, daylighted about 1911-1912, and the Pulpit Rock Tunnel below Port Clinton, bypassed by the realignment in the 1920s, though the tunnel is still there today.
