What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

TOPIC: 8th tunnel on the Reading??

8th tunnel on the Reading?? 9 years 5 months ago #3581

Over the last 6 plus months, I've been re-educating myself on the Reading. I know definitely the Reading had 7 tunnels and I've been able to account for them. Mahanoy, Tamaqua, Lofty, Perkasie, Dillinger(Vera Cruz), Phoenixville, and Flat Rock. But as I very recently viewed numerous online historical topo maps from the USGS I discovered another tunnel on the Reading...showing about a mile SW of Shumans on the upper region of the Catawissa branch. The 7.5 min series map is dated 1955 and is the Shumans quadrangle.

For me...the Catawissa branch is a little known part of the Reading. Is anyone familiar with this tunnel?

I believe I have been at and may have photos of Shuman's Tunnel a loooong time ago. (I will check when I get home) Steve Gilbert is somewhat of an expert on the Catawissa Branch and was doing landmark by landmark articles starting at the Haucks end in the RCT&HS Beeline around the 90's. I don't remember how far he got though.

Also another tunnel of note is near Hamburg on the mainline. This can be seen from Rte 61, going north just before the river bridge, south of Pt. Clinton. The east (south?) portal is on very private property and is inaccessible. The tunnel was bypassed in a realignment of both the railroad AND the Schuylkill River. Unused by the Reading, the tunnel sealed off, became a privately owned mushroom house, owned by the agent from Temple Station. The realignment was also the topic of a early Bee Line Article.

I was thinking of that too, Butch just couldn't think of the name.

What about the Park Jct. tunnel under the Art Museum connection with the B&O. Does that count as an official tunnel?

I think that was a man made tunnel so it doesn't count.

LOL Aren't all (most) tunnels manmade.....?
I guess the object being tunneled is man made in that case, and thus the disqualifier.
