What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

Looking for photos, maps, equipment used, etc. around 1965, Birdsboro area. Grace mine, Traprock, other industries served and Pottsville coal region. Mainly modeling Birdsboro-Reading-Pottsville and branch through south Birdsboro to Traprock and onto Grace mine.

On a separate note am also looking for photos of steam locos used at Birdsboro Corp.

Thanks for your help, greatly appreciated! :)

In your quest for Pottsville, here are two color photos given to me by a fellow modeler. The first with the GP-7 is where the train shed used to be and is looking north with Rt.61 behind the red building to the right. The second with the RS-3 is a little south of the first pic, Rt. 61 directly behind and looking east. I have to go on a serious dig, but I might have some track and station blueprints. The trackage in Mt. Carbon heading into Pottsville is mostly still intact.

As promised some track maps, admittedly I have to archive my collection a little better! Anyhow, this set of pictures are Mt. Carbon, just south of Pottsville. You will see the track bearing to Port Carbon, leading to the wye for St. Clair yard, the PRR is present day Route 61. If you Google maps of the area the vegetation is a bit thick, but you can barely see the track paralleling Center St.

Now, this is way earlier than desired, but you can get a great view at what existed in 1943. This map starts at Washington St. Unfortunately I never took a picture of the steel bridge that spanned the yard. In the series of photos they will lead to the end at Norwegian St.

Here are some drawings of the freight station January 1961. This building still exists as the Schuylkill County credit union.

I forgot to add this picture earlier, but RS-3 no. 493 close to the Union St. crossing.
