What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? Thanks for the link to the aerial photos. The change from 1982 and 1992 was stark; The yard had been removed. I had downloaded the Bridgeport, NJ 7.5-minute quadrangle (item 4567306) from 1967 so I could get an idea where the yard had been. The original map probably showed the yard, turntable and engine house. However, the revision date of this map was 1994 and it showed the yard had been removed.

Thanks to all for the facility drawing and the aerial site link. Not what I expected to see after viewing those steam era photos. The turntable behind the engine house with run-around tracks on either side is interesting; wonder if at one time there was a lead to the north side of the table? The Reading Co. volume of the soft cover series Northeastern Railroads has Chester Br. photos that suggest a more idyllic setting rather than along the Delaware R. south of Philly. The 1953 Bridgeport NJ-PA 7.5-minute quadrangle (item 4567298) does have a depiction of the Darby Creek yard. The name "READING" is prominent on the tracks along the yard.

It also shows an extensive network of trackage serving the industrial area east of Essington on what is now just east of PHL. It does not show the airport runway (10-28?).

On the other hand, the 1994 revision of the 1967 map shows the trackage has been removed, but it does show the runway as a revision to the map. The tracks along where the yard had been are still in place, but are not named on the map.

Neat thread. I've seen so many Reading photos at Darby Creek, it's hard to believe its been leveled. The engine house seems to be a style repeated at Shamokin and Gordon.
