What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

Its from a slide I bought on Ebay. Its unfortunate that the photogrpaher isn't identified. Its captioned as an "unknown location" but the color position light signal and locos in the background (Baldwin Swithcers and EMD Geep) tell me B&O. Also the Zuckerman and Honigsman sign on the building on the right identifies a Philadelphia manufacturer.

Can anyone explain the function or purpose of that octagon shaped concrete “hut” in the foreground of the picture? A similar structure still stands along the Thun rail trail that follows the PRR Schuylkill Division. It is located just east of the yard along Morgantown Road. It looks like it might have been used for telephone or telegraph equipment. Maybe a phone booth of sorts?

The B&O was a user of these pre-cast concrete octagonal phone booths. They were in HO for a while .For years there was one along I-676 on the B&O branch to the waterfront, just below Passyunk Ave. Major customer was the Atlantic /Arco refinery North Yard (the portion north of Passyunk Ave. PRR/PC served the south yard. The north yard served the refinery's LP gas business which was lucrative, also the Lube Oil plant with tanks and boxcar business also, as well as the old Barrett roofing plant. The view in the picture is from the Gray's Ferry Ave bridge over the B&O, looking southwest to the B&O bridge over the Scuylkill. In the background is the yard office and RG tower (B&O)-the actual yard is off the main, along the line that goes to the Phila waterfront, following I-676 and the PRR/PC Delaware Extension
