TOPIC: a small town near Reading PA

a small town near Reading PA 10 years 3 months ago #2469

My dad mentioned a small town nearby to Leesport, on the west side if I am correct, it is called Garfield. The size might be like Riverveiw Park
a part of Muhlenberg Township in north Reading PA.
Has anybody ever heard of Garfield PA?

Garfield, - Kind of sounds familiar. It is not an incorporated municipality at all, but I seem to recall hearing it. I will do some research when I can. (At work currently)

There is definitely a Greenfield in range of Leesport and it could even be a Leesport post office "R.D." area. Although there is no rail service to it. That would be the area immediately south of the Reading Airport.

I think its between Leesport and Bernville, probably just a few homes at a crossroad. Rob's correct that there wouldn't be any rail service, at least none that I am aware of.

I'll add a vote to what was already expressed. I've lived in Leesport for 20+ years. Never heard of Garfield. Certainly no rail service. As Rob stated, the area around the Reading Airport is Greenfields.

Yes Bill, exactly..... Back from Bern Church on 183, at the intersection of Plum Creek Road and Garfield Road. There is (or was) a private fishing pond there owned by a guy named Mike Duchan, who worked at Carpenter. He was one of the locomotive engineers at Carpenter Technology on their 24 inch industrial railroad. I think he bought one of the "dinkey's" as they called the Plymouth switchers, or at least he tried to buy it, he was going to run a track around the pond...... (I have not seen evidence of that when I pass through) He also bought Carpenter's old fire truck (probably a 40's era Mack, ex Reading FD truck) to aerate the pond.

I pass through there on my way to my brother's, who lives on Rake Road near Bootleg Road.

And there are no other railroads in that neighborhood either - although there is a trolley near there on "Trolley Road" that was converted to a bungalow.

Interesting that my dad would know of a small place called Garfield, even if it is Garfield Road. Also my dad worked at Carpenter Steel before they went to Car/Tech.
My dad said it was near the Cross Keys bridge and the turn-off for Bernville on the backside of Dauberville RR 2(rural route 2 for mails service).

Thank you for the info!
