As modelers we were sad to see the end of an era when RMC magazine decided to call it quits, but to my delight, White River Productions has picked where Carsten's left off beginning this month. I hope the quality of the publication will be up the late Hal's standards.

whoa! Did Hal carsten pass away? How did I miss that news? I must have been on vacation. No wonder I didn't receive my RMC lately. RMC was my favorite Mag. over the others. I wonder how the balance of my subscription will fare. Is it dead and lost forever. Will I have to start a new one with white river? Is it too soon to know? Will They pick up any of the writers and the editing staff? Or will the whole format change? I hate change. I guess thats why I model the old. Time will tell. :(

Daniel and all....
The info I have from several emails is -
first, Carsten did not pass away. This was simply a business decision, problems with creditors/lenders (not like he owed them, they wouldn't play nice anymore) and other factors.

2) my info says that all subscriptions will be fully completed. If you are owed 3 more issues to complete your current subscription, you will get 3 more issues. White River has stepped-up on that front.

3) I believe the format will remain most the same, no major changes are planned.

So be patient, have faith and it looks like all will be well.
Thanks,
Barry

It is funny..... I believe I have a video tape of it, but I remember standing by Tony Koester's Allegheny Midland and him telling us how he and Jim Boyd (when both were the editors of RMC and RR&RF) went to the Colonel and gave him a plan that would smash MR&T. Hal wanted no parts of it... Now Tony works for MR and RMC as we knew it, isn't.

I too liked RMC because they seemed to have a more local flair to our region and more useful articles. Didn't spend so much time stroking the manufacturers.

Col. Hal Carsten passed away June 23, 2009 (obituary that appeared in 8/09 RMC attached photo below). The family who was in charge of operations didn't posses that same great love or commitment for the hobby and or industry like he did. They did as so many successors, just barely make it along. As I posted before, hopefully the content quality will be the same if not better with more involved prototype writings.

Rob, I too liked RMC for that reason. It was obvious that many of the articals were local roads. and I felt there were more articals on kitbashing (modeling) or scratch building and usually along with a prototype history artical with Drawings for actual dimensions. Many of us have referred to them in this forum. I hope Barry is right. A smooth transition. I also hope the content remains the same high quality as before.
