The Shelly and Fenstermacher coal business structure in Perkasie was destroyed in a huge fire in the business district on June 26, 1988. They did rebuild a “hardware” style building down the street after the fire.

Elverson Supply had a coal trestle in place in the early 1970's, but I think their last hopper of coal (Reading Anthracite)was in the late 1960's.

Browns on Lancaster ave was still getting R&N hoppers 10 to 15 years ago. I got a crappy pic of one, which could well have been the last ever rail delivery of coal in the city of Reading. I really hope I can find that. I stopped over there a few years ago and they told me how they could get 2
Or 3 truckloads cheaper than 1 hopper, and also the dangers of unloading a 100 tons of coal up on that old trestle.

Loss of mail and Railway Express Agency contracts prompts severe cuts in passenger service, including annulment of all service to Shamokin, and the Allentown-Harrisburg trains, and a reduction on remaining routes. RDCs replace most locomotive-hauled trains, freeing former passenger locomotives for freight service.
