Assume this HO car being offered by Bowser is pure fancy as it comes in several road names. Was there ever such a car on any of the Anthracite roads?

I think the prototype for the blue coal hopper was an old HO AHM or Tyco offset hopper car back in the 60's... I never saw any evidence of such a car.... The real kicker of course is while the early cars were Reading, and most of the newer models (There is even an O Scale version - MTH maybe).... The Famous Reading Anthracite product was sprayed with RED dye for marketing.

"Blue Coal" is the term for a once-popular and trademarked brand of anthracite, mined by the Glen Alden Coal Company in Pennsylvania, and sprayed with a blue dye at the mine before shipping to its northeastern U.S. markets to distinguish it from its competitors.

Blue Coal evolved from the antitrust breakup of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, which led to creation of Glen Alden Coal Co. in 1921.

Blue Coal Reading hoppers are a fantasy.

That said, I have one, as they do get the non-railroader’s attention.

Blue Coal was the first point of suspicion as Reading Anthracite sprayed their coal with red paint. The second was the type coal hopper as the Reading never had an offset quad, only ribbed side quads. Thank to all for laying this Blue Coal hopper question to rest.
