I just received my latest copy of RMC. In product news was a artical about Rivarossi U-28-C Phase 1 for 2015. I wonder If the Reading U-30-C was basicly in a U-28-C carbody. How far off would a U-28-C phase 1 be from the car body used on the reading U-30-C? OK! Before I cut up older atlas & Athearn bodies on a bench project I have been putting off, I think I will wait to see this new model by Hornby America / Rivarossi. And check the new model against the specs. can anyone add more info to this. Thanks dan

Several years back there was an article in Railroad Model Craftsman about modeling a Reading U30C. The article, which I believe was by Bill Gruber, said the Reading U30Cs were early models and were actually in U28C car bodies.

I think that you would be better off kitbashing the RDG U30c the way that the article in RMC says to do. That way you will have a more prototypical RDG Unit.

The Hornby model is a early U28c phase 1. The RDG U30c is an early production that incorporated the new U30c innards with a LATE phase U28c carbody. This carbody is a lot more different than the Hornby Model.

I think it would take more work to make the Hornby Model prototypical than the Atlas Model, On the Hornby Model. You not only have to change the rear section (just like on the Atlas model) but the roof section as well. Plus other minor details.

It can be done but it would be a lot more work.

I failed to mention that the RMC article, Bill used the Athearn U28C for his Reading U30C.

To add to this, if your thinking of doing the kitbash, RMC November 2003 has drawings of the "phase 1b" Reading carbody. The article does break down the variations of the early U30c. I'm getting ready to do a kitbash of the RDG U30c myself. I'll be using a phase 2 Atlas model and a Proto U30B. Proto makes the correct U30b "phase 1b" carbody with the correct rear end configuration. I have yet to decide on what cuts to make for this bash and how it will work using the Atlas walkway. I have been holding myself back for the past 6 months on starting this until I get a few other projects out of the way. This bash will be more accurate than using the old Athearn U28c.

OOPS! Sorry as I was thinking that article was the Atlas- Proto 2000 kitbash. Didn't mean to mislead anyone.
