This is my first attempt at kitbashing a steam locomotive. The shell is an older Bachmann model that's going onto a Spectrum drive. I've been inspired watching Casey knock out all his great models for a few years now, and finally got the nerve to get started on what i hope is a fairly achievable conversion. So after chiseling for a while i took a photo break once the inevitable thumb stabbing finally happened.

Interesting project. Looking at the drawings, you'll have to add about 2 scale feet to the firebox and 4 scale feet to the boiler.

Thanks for mentioning the firebox length difference. I hadn't dug out any drawings yet, and forgot they had the steam list on the alphabet route. Having looked at lots of various pics of the M-1's, I know i'll have to make a few compromises to be able to utilize the Bachmann shell, but it's easier than scratching it.
So i got the smokebox cut off, and the engineer's side started today.

Mr. Bill, if you have "Reading Power Pictorial" be sure to check p.100 as there is a great broadside photo (1706) to scale your boiler extension. This project is on my to do list someday, and I am looking forward to your progress!

Bachmann is one of the bigger miracles of modeling the Reading, as it at least gives us a decent chance of being able to have some Wootens in our fleet! Looking forward to seeing the final piece!
