Every lump of coal counts. In a rounded area you lose a little space and the ton rating isn't the absolute weight cap.

I see what you are saying but I would think that the opposite would be true, maybe the companies wanted the employees not to overfill the tenders? Since the T1s were built after the K1s if this was really an advantage they would have incorporated it into the new engines. Another example is the N&W A,Y,J and K classes which all had their straight side tenders scrapped for curved top larger capacity tenders.

It also may have been done because it looked better to them :P

Chris, before you dive headfirst into the k1 project, ditch the Con-Cor and get the Bachmann light 2-10-2...teh con-cor is way too long for the prototype. the Bachmann is the correct size. I bought the con-cor when it was the only Santa Fe available. When bachmann came out with theirs, the measurements were almost identical to the drawing of the K1. Total length, driver wheelbase, etc. Plus the bachmann will most likely have better QC.

To late :P .The reason I picked up the concor was because I plan on doing a K1sa, I should have explained more...it looked to me like the heavy 2-10-2 was a better match for what I wanted to do.

From steamlocomotive.com
K1sa
Driver wheelbase 22'
engine wheelbase 42'
Driver diameter 62"

Heavy 2-10-2
Driver wheelbase 22.3'
engine wheelbase 42.2'
Driver diameter 63"

Light 2-10-2
Driver wheelbase 21'
engine wheelbase 40.3'
Driver diameter 57"

Interesting. It's been several months since i sold mine, I wonder what measurements and notes i took back then. I swore the bachmann was a closer match, otherwise i wouldn't have sold my con-cor that took me 5 years to afford....I'll have to re evaluate it and see...or I'll just see how your project comes along :P
