What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

Well, I certainly have taken a nice leave of absence from the site, and from modeling altogether since i got home from Korea. Well, I've facved the reality that until I'm retired from the military in about 8 years, I need to just buckle down and build a real self contained layout that I can move with me wherever we go next. I actually tried my hand at NTrak modules for the local club, but decided I don't have the resources (money) to build modules, and also a layout, so I have finally decided to build my N scale empire on a hollow core door, 36x80.

Since it is a small layout, it will be "loosely" based on Reading's coal country, and I will have to use a LOT of selective compression. Also, I want to be able to run more than just a couple engines without having to swap them on/off the tracks, so I am going to build an extension on the side for a very compressed Gordon scene, including the ballast hopper track next to the engine house.

Problem is I can't find much on the area aside from the pictures in the STeam in Color book, from the same angle of the house, not much else to go by.

Does anyone have a half decent drawing or map showing the location of the buildings and trackage of the facility? I know Jim Hertzog made a somewhat protoype layout featuring Gordon and i have a copy of his layout drawing for reference.

The basics I need are the engine house, and the servicing facilities (coal tower, water tower, ash pit, etc). Did Gordon have a caboose track? Or a freight yard? I'd like to gather as much as possible, as i plan on laying ground this weekend.

Thanks and sorry for the winded post!!!

Welcome Home Turbo. and again Thanks for your service. Your back, and a friend of mine just went over a few weeks ago. Seeing a lot of Seoul on his Facebook page.

One of the best resources for Gordon information is the Model Railroader article from back around 1958 (I think) track plan and good photo coverage. Unfortunately I am at work and t is at home... so sometime through the week end I shall scan and send that to you, unless someone can beat me to it.

Geez MR doesn't even search for issues before 1985! I'm going to buy a door tomorrow after work, and will figure out how much space I need to add for the Gordon complex this weekend hopefully. Still need to figure out what facilities I'm going to need.

What kind of diesel/steam servicing was there around '52-'58? Ash pits or sanding towers? water tower? Only thing I ever see in pictures are the engine house and the coaling tower, but there's gotta be a full service engine facility I would think

OK Free for all......
I cannot see (quickly) how to attach anything to a private message, so it is off to plan B.. attach to a post.... maybe it doesn't like pdf's????

Printer running low on ink (Of course) so I hope it is clear enough on here, if not - I guess we'll go to plan C.
