Just stumbled upon this thread on Railway Preservation News regarding the uncertain fate of the 2100.

2100: Railway Preservation News

Does anyone here have up-to-date information on the status of this locomotive? Has another restoration group acquired it? Lots of rumors abound, so let’s try and get some facts.
What a tremendous blow it would be to the preservation of the Reading Railroad’s legacy if this iconic locomotive were sent to the torch after all this time.

This link shows recent photos of the 2100 stored outside in the northwest.

Thanks, Mark

Mark, I just looked over the posts on that site. the most recent is Feb, 2014, almost a year ago. and most are about the poor way they converted her to oil. there have been discussions all over the internet about the 2100, and the bottom line is nothing can be done without having "the money to work with" on any preservation or restoration of any piece of railroad equipment. unless someones "rich uncle" comes foward. I know we all would like to see 2100 come back to Pennsylvania.especially those of us who remember seeing her in person while watching or riding the RAMBLES in the 1960'S.hopefully she will be ok for awhile until someone does find the money to bring her back. It would be nice if the RCT&HS could get it for display while waiting for that rich uncle. I sure hope its not scrapped and getting her back to PA where there might be more intrest in preserving her couldn't hurt.

OK... let's do some surmising...
How much does a T-1 weigh, empty?
Could this be transported via rail car(s) (one for tender, one for loco)?

if that is not possible... then what do you think of removing the rods and having it towed?

finally... guessing it would take ... $300,000 to move her back to PA?
unless a HUGE PR effort could get the railroads to do it for a reduced rate in the name of preservation. Sound like a plan....!
Thanks,
Barry

Guys, thinking that RCTHS could get and preserve 2100 is a nice thought. However, the truth is not too nice. They can't keep up with the units already preserved, let alone work on the bulk of the collection. Last thing we need is another rusting hulk in Hamburg.

The best bet for a preserved and operating T-1 is Andy Muller and 2102. Maybe Andy would like a pair. As far as RCTHS, they have a C-424, a GP-35, and an RS-3 that are rusting away, and the previously painted units are 20+ years since re-painted. They need to be encouraged to work on what they have.
