Reading Company Milk Cars
In the earlier days of rail transport before mechanical refrigeration, milk was picked up at stops along the line of road and hauled to creameries and other destinations in specially-equipped cars. This traffic led to the creation of the phrase "Milk Run." The Reading rostered several classess of these cars during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, before mechanical reefers and better insulated boxcars became available. Clicking the links below will open the reference document in a separate window; clicking the camera icon (where available) will display a photo in a separate window.
