Building the House at Schuylkill Haven
In addition to maintaining a collection of over 70 pieces of Reading Company rolling stock, the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society also maintains a very large HO scale modular layout featuring a variety of scenes from various locales along the Reading. The layout is exhibited several times throughout the year at shopping malls, museums, and other events, and is one of the Society's most effective public relations tools.
While most modules are built and maintained by individual members, many of whom reside in the Central/SE PA area, some scenes are a collaborative effort among the group. Although he lives in the Detroit, MI area, long-time RCTHS member Barry Hensel has contributed some structures to the layout, including a scratchbuilt house that is a near-exact replica of a prototype residence along the former Reading Main Line in Schuylkill Haven. Click here to download a PDF presentation showing how Barry worked from a variety of photos to capture and emulate the look of the prototype - his method for anchoring buildings to the layout surface is ingenious!
