Modeling the Reading's RS-3s
The Reading rostered 67 Alco RS-3 road switcher locomotives; they were the largest class of first-generation diesel locomotives. Truly an all-purpose locomotive, they served in both freight and passenger service (until the cessation of locomotive-hauled passenger trains) and remained in service until the final years of the Reading's existence. From hauling solid trains of iron ore out of the Grace Mine on the Joanna Turn, to local freights on the crossline, the RS3s served the Reading well during their time in service.
The Reading's RS3s were delivered in groups, with several variations between groups of locomotives. Reading Modeler member Bill Witman (JoannaBill) has done extensive research into the various "classes" of RS3s and their differences and has prepared a clinic on these spotting features. This information can be used to accurately model the different groups of these workhorse locomotives. Click here to download the clinic in PDF format.
