This is 1 before (Photos 5146 & 5149) and mostly after on my Trainmaster draft gear project. It is a means to an end on just trying to get couplers on this loco, but fixing a major improvement in the looks as well.

It is all reasonably accurate from the measurements I took at the modelers meeting

It was not my intention to install the parts now. I was going to do it after I stripped the paint. I had to mill off the original coupler pad to get the drive out. But since I did the frame milling first thing this morning I could not mount any coupler, and run it with a train.

This is a major departure in my previous draft gear designs. While my printer is good, it is not going to easily made a .010 thick wall tube as the coupler pivot. The 2-56 screw that holds the lid on becomes the coupler pivot. Also, *** I put the centering spring in LAST***. Put the coupler on the lid, slide it in the draft gear, put the screw in, then pop the centering spring in place. That was a 11:00 last night discovery that I could not access to put the spring in. I revised the lid to make a spring access hole. But that is OK because there is not much movement anyway. I could have easily gone without the centering spring. I don’t do delay uncoupling.

I can mostly plan and design but sometimes something pops up I did not consider. I need to see what I have done in place to see what needs to be done.

It took most of the weekend, about 4 rounds of printing, revising and tweaking until I was happy with it all. The files I have saved now are revised and different than what I used.

I have already pulled a train with the new draft gear. Because it is a plug installed from the back it is not going anywhere. Short of a head on collision I have no doubts this will be durable.

This modification is probably the biggest change I am making. I am probably going to fill in the second headlight on the short hood before painting for Reading.

Bill

Bill, it looks great, I'm guessing you made the part with your 3D printer. Butch Curll
