What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

There are some possibilities out there for these hollow Mack R cabs. Any one that is modeling them will need as you say like 32 per car. I will probably be happy with one car, at least for a week and then I'll want two...... etc., etc.
There seems to be some people out there that are casting cabs at around 7 bucks each, but they have a hood on them. We need the hood off and a firewall applied......

If anyone gets antsy about pursuing these, please let us think about it as a group effort and maybe we an get a couple hundred made for us all at a cheaper rate.

I took the photo of the empty car, the photo of the loaded car is by Dave Hopson and was on Facebook. I also have a Houser photo showing the cabs are rather red, mostly likely primer, not a finish coat.

I don't have a color photo, but a red, rust inhibiting primer would have been typical in the 1960's, early to mid 1970's. In late 1979, the gov't made manufacturers remove the lead from their paints, so the color no doubt changed.

There was a slide a few months back I recall seeing on E-Bay, as Joanna Bill mentioned the cabs were in a red oxide primer. If memory serves they were on a TTX style double deck automobile flat. Given the longevity of the production run, (1966) the "R" model mack cab would have been in both color primers.

Bought a binder of Conrail photos and this was in it. Grey primer cabs, other photos show cabs in oxide red primer. Most likely taken in the early 80's in Allentown.

Bob Wilt has photos of these cars in color. I have some RDG waybills from the early 70's which list these shipments. They went to a Mack assembly Plant in Cali. The City escapes me at the moment, but it *might* have been Richmond CA, near Oakland.
