What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

Posted today under READING RAILROAD, contractor photo of the Reading roundhouse interior in the late stages of construction, very nice side shot of the relief train tool car converted from a gondola car shorn to its deck, and just visible, at the far end of a three car string of doodlebugs and trailers, that hard to find in-service, center-cab diesel switcher (Out of service?). Several other shots of stations, junctions, signals (Hall banjos in a dark color with light ring around the opening with hand painted signal number.) and yards.

Loss of mail and Railway Express Agency contracts prompts severe cuts in passenger service, including annulment of all service to Shamokin, and the Allentown-Harrisburg trains, and a reduction on remaining routes. RDCs replace most locomotive-hauled trains, freeing former passenger locomotives for freight service.
