Although this article covers class HTd, e, and g, I thought the information on the frame modifications might be helpful.

Anthracite Speed Lettering and Factory Paint.

(Wish TrainLife would get the rights to post old Railroad Model Craftsman issues.)

OK..... HTz conversion project update. Replaced the top chord. Next stop is the dunk tank to get rid of the CSX paint. Then it will be filling and sanding the seam.

mark I have been upgrading several lifelike and older models using this method of frame stretching and the other details. The tricky part was the KD boxes. they sometimes come off when they slam the parked cars on the hump. I just did 3 at Christmas. I will post the pics later. These are the HTd,& HTe I have been meaning to do the cut down to make the HTz but don't have the decals for in the orange wedge.

Maybe I have missed something, but why is the top chord from the Life-Like hopper car being re-used abit with putty and sanding on the seam. Would it be a whole bunch easier to just fabricate a new top chord out of Evergreen styrene shapes?

My thought process was to save the rivet line that is just under the top chord...... When I went to sand the area, I had little room to maneuver without taking out the rivets anyway, so I really decided it would probably be easier on the rest of the cars to eliminate the seam and add rivets via the "rivet decal" or some other means since they are only visible in a couple spaces between the reinforcement angles anyway.

Here is another image of an HTz to aid in your modeling project. This slide is currently up for bid on eBay.

HTz 40174

After checking the listing in Bossler’s book, I was surprised at the large number of cars in this class. Lee at Bowser Trains recently sent out an email asking modelers for suggestions of future products. His company is probably our only hope of getting an HTz mass-produced.
