What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

All that's left of the pellet plant is the foundation. You're right that they don't like people on the property and as such I don't recommend that anyone go in and look around. I can see the place out my home office window.

The GP-35's are passing under the infamous "Iron Bridge" which carried Penn Ave from Wyomissing across the Valley into Spring Twp. The bridge was removed when the Warren Street Bypass eventually made the connection to Penn Ave. and eliminated this landmark and the "Queen of the Valley" Diner in about 1970-72. The "Queen" would have sat kind of to the left and maybe a bit behind the photographer.
There is a foot bridge over the tracks that was still open by Victors Cafe last time I was in the area that makes for some good picture taking.

This was also the sight of a pretty good sized wreck around 1977 on Conrail's watch. I was working Berks Police Radio that nice quiet Sunday morning when suddenly the phones lit up like a Christmas tree with everyone saying it sounded like an explosion just occurred. The Reading hook was still very Green and Yellow for that cleanup. The Eastbound sinding was removed at the time of the wreck, I do believe, or would it be more appropriate to say it was not replaced. I snuck over at lunch ime and took some "Polaroid" photos of the wreck. How's that for showing my age. I was a womoing 23 years old.

BTW Sinking Spring is still a couple miles west and behind the photographer. Through that area known as West Lawn, West Wyomissing and Whiskey Ditch the track went back to double rather than four tracks.

Mitch, I grew up along the Shamokin Branch. After Gordon closed in 1971 my grandfather went to Lebanon and Rutherford until his retirement in 1976 and my greatuncle worked at West Milton Rupert, and St.Nicholas until he retiered in 1980.All my neighbors were all Reading engineers and they all passed away back in the nineties. Names like Bill Sell ,Russell"Wayne"Kauffman Lawrence Trommetter Glen Hubler Timothy Snyder. You get to know them from seeing them everday doing there job and by living almost right aside or across the street from them. I used to like going to Philadelphia and Reading when I was a kid to that the Reading was really alot bigger. We used to have to take my brother to St.Christopher's Childrens Hosptal in Philadelphia.
